Bilingual Italian students gain International Certification

Five former students of the Italian Bilingual School in Leichhardt were among the first Australian children to be presented with CELI certificates on 16 August 2010. CELI (Certificati Lingua Italiana) is an exam that assesses an individual's level of fluency in Italian based on the standards established by the Council of Europe for the learning of modern languages.

Co.As.It. to open new Italian Daycare Centres

Co.As.It., the Italian Association of Assistance, has been contracted by the Australian Nursing Home Foundation to open three new centre-based daycare centres for senior members of the Italian community in the inner west and south west of Sydney.

Italian National Ball helps the elderly and isolated

The 42nd Italian National Ball, held at Curzon Hall on 5 June drew more than 300 patrons with representation from both State and Federal Government. Formal speeches were presented by NSW Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell, NSW Minister for Education & Training Verity Firth, Italian Consul General Benedetto Latteri, Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Anthony Albanese, as well as Co.As.It. President Lorenzo Fazzini.

Italian Ambassador visits Bilingual School

On 23 March 2010, the Italian Ambassador Gian Ludovico De Martino di Montegiordano paid the Italian Bilingual School a special visit. Accompanied by the Italian Consulate Benedetto Latteri, his Educational Attachè Dott. Sergio Rapisardi and management and Board members of Co.As.It., he was treated to a tour of the newly upgraded school site at Casa d'Italia.

Co.As.It., the Italian Association of Assistance, is launching a new Italian language program for adults based on a European Certification Framework. The new program, which starts in February 2010, offers 25 graded modules based on the six main levels recognised by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

An estimated 300 members of the Italian-Australian community attended Co.As.It.'s recent series of Italian information sessions targeting seniors and their families that were held in Burwood, Bankstown, Bossley Park, North Ryde and Five Dock throughout November. The sessions focused on the topic of dementia, as well as the emotional phases and changes typical of the senior years.

On 14 October Co.As.It. held an information session for Italian-Australians that encouraged them to become more involved in activities and in the community. The event was part of Mental Health Week, and had the theme: 'Sign up, Link in, Get involved'.

Enrolments open for children's Italian classes

The Co.As.It. Out-of-School Hours (OSH) Italian Language and Culture program for children aged 5 to 18 years-old, is now taking enrolments for 2010. The new term starts during the first week of February 2010 and is offered at 19 locations around NSW.
Venues in the Sydney metropolitan area include: Ashfield, Castle Hill, Connell's Point, Earlwood, Epping North, Five Dock, Georges Hall, Gladesville, Harbord, Leichhardt, Miranda, Paddington, St Johns Park, Waverton and Westmead. The course is also offered in Newcastle and Wollongong.

The Building Education Revolution initiative from the Rudd government's recent Stimulus Package, puts the Italian Bilingual School in line to receive $586,000 to refurbish its existing building and expand its resources.
The school's European-influenced program has just seen its first group of eight students go to Italy for a three-week overseas study tour. Together they visited central Italy, Siena, Assisi, Perugia and Spoleto and joined the students at the Scuola Elementare Antolini at Ponte Valleceppi, Perugia in all their lessons and excursions.
