Journey to a New Life – Italian Migration in NSW
The Powerhouse Discovery Centre celebrates the history of Italian migration in NSW with a new photographic exhibition,Journey to a New Life.
8 November 2008-31 July 2009
Presented in partnership with the Powerhouse Museum, Co.As.It and the NSW Migration Heritage Centre, the Powerhouse Discovery Centre will present a new photographic exhibition of 24 historical photographs documenting Italian migration andItalian life in NSW from the late nineteenth century to the present.
Presented on the upper level of the Discovery Centre's Display Store,
these powerful images focus on themes including; 'journey'; 'pioneers';
'family'; 'church'; 'community'; 'work' and 'wars'. The exhibition pays an
emotional tribute to the courage and sacrifices made by Italians who left
behind their beloved Italy and landed on the shores of NSW to start their
journey to a new life.
Accompanying the photographs is a showcase of treasured objects sourced from members of the Italian community from greater Sydney. The objects and their stories-two comic books made in a refugee camp in Taranto, Italy in the late 1940s, needle cases gifted by an Italian prisoner in 1945, and a letter opener made in Italy during WWII from the melted remains of hand grenades-further enrich the history and journey of Italian migration in NSW. These objects and their stories are part of the Belongings project, an online exhibition initiative of the NSW Migration Heritage Centre. Belongings tells the stories of people and their life experiences through personal mementos, photographs and memories. Some are treasured objects brought from the 'old country'; others are souvenirs of the journey out; or keepsakes from their first home or job.
