The Co.As.It. Companionship Program provides a volunteer visitor to older
Italians in their own homes. It gives them an opportunity to socialise and
converse in their own language.
Eighty year-old Cristina, who lost her husband four years ago, is a
recipient of this free service. Her children are all grown up, so she lives
on her own at home. Before Signora Cristina joined the Companionship
Program, she had nothing to stimulate her or to look forward to. Her
daughter Rosalie has noticed a significant change in her attitude since
having weekly visits from the Co.As.It. volunteer. "Mum used to bake and
was a good cook, but had given up doing anything", says Rosalie. "The other
day we went shopping, and I caught her looking at the almond meal, icing
sugar, etc. I think she will start cooking again. She is also happier these
The Companionship Program started in June 2009 with the one-off support of
the Community Relations Commission but from this year, it will not receive
any funding from Government. So we seek your support in helping us to
continue this service which currently enhances the quality of life of 19
senior members of the Italian-Australian community. There are 50 on the
waiting list and many others who need the service.
You can help by attending the Italian National
on 1 June 2012 or by making a online
for the program. All donations are tax deductible.
Thank you for your support.
