An Italian-Australian Family History Group that operates under the auspices of Co.As.It. at Casa d'Italia in Leichhardt. Our members are keen to retain their Italian heritage, trace their respective family tree and record events pertaining to their ancestors. Emphasis is placed on those who want to record their story since their arrival in Australia.

When and where does the group meet?

Meetings are held monthly (except December & January) at Casa d'Italia, 67 Norton Street Leichhardt in the San Francesco Room on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 7.00 pm.

Why do we meet?

To bring together those interested in genealogy, creating a forum where attendees can freely exchange information, views and experiences. Participants also have the opportunity to hear guest speakers each month who provide a wide range of Italian family history matters.

Is there a cost to be involved?

Co.As.It provides, free of charge, a venue and equipment to hold the monthly meetings. The Heritage Project Officer assists the group with resources, photocopying and mail outs. The Family History Group does however, seek a voluntary 'gold coin' donation to meet supper expenses.

Aims and objectives of the Co.As.It. family history group are:

  • To promote and encourage individuals to further their knowledge of their Italian ancestors, and heritage.
  • To liaise with other societies, to share information, and to promote an awareness of Italian genealogy.
  • To record and tabulate names of families under research
  • To record information on research methods and sources.
  • To assist each other in family history research and to make it easier for newcomers in particular.
  • To share our knowledge with others working in Italian genealogy on a voluntary basis
  • To acquire books, periodicals, and research aids by purchase or donation. Such materials to become the property of the Italian Multimedia Resource Centre, and to be housed in the library of Co.As.It.. In the event of the group being wound up such acquisitions and equipment shall be donated to the Italian Multimedia Resource Centre of Co.As.It.
  • To work in co-operation with the library staff and to assist them by answering any enquiries relating to Italian Genealogy.
  • To instigate or participate in any research project undertaken by the group as decided at a general meeting of members.
  • To function as a group under the jurisdiction of the heritage committee of the Co.As.It. organisation, and to abide by the rules of Co.As.It.
